Some albums show where an artist is headed. This one shows where he began—and what he’s learned along the way.
I Sometimes Think (Better) is a re-imagination of Steve’s debut record from twenty years ago.
“Because I didn’t have a band like The Fourteens when I was making the first record, I played every track myself,” Baskin says. “I was literally learning how to make a record. Having them onboard as part of the project gave me the tools to record the songs the way I’d originally envisioned them.”
Two of the songs, “Beside You” and “Trip Begin,” earned Billboard Songwriter Awards, and the opening track “How I Feel” landed on a Paste Magazine sampler in 2006, marking Steve as a rising songwriter who could wrap real emotion in radio-ready hooks.
Lyrically, the album speaks to love that won’t quit, mistakes that still sting, and the stubborn hope that maybe this time it’ll all turn out a little bit better. In “Where You Are,” the narrator waits, uncertain and wide-eyed throughout the rock-solid Power Pop ditty. But by the time we get to the jammy, Southern-rock anthem, “I Sometimes Think,” he’s learned that solitude can teach you what’s important. The emotional arc mirrors Baskin’s own evolution—from a new songwriter chasing a sound to a grounded artist defining it.
If Baskin’s 2024 release, Love Is Hard, chronicled the endurance of love, I Sometimes Think (Better) celebrates the endurance of art – the idea that good songs can keep growing, just like the people who write them. It’s the sound of a veteran artist rediscovering his own spark through the camaraderie of a band that feels like family.
